His marathon personal best is 4 hours & 2 minutes. He finished 11 ultramarathons including the exceptionally tough Bataan Death March Ultramarathon (BDM 102) with a time of 13 hours & 38 minutes. Undoubtedly, the ever-competitive financial analyst from Makati City, Syril Wong, had set himself to go further in long distance running and in life.
Syril is a self confessed gym rat. He usually spent most of his time working out to keep himself physically fit. On weekends, he runs with his friends for LSDs (Long Slow Distance) as preparation for their races. He also makes sure to maintain proper diet and to always find time to rest and recover. This has been his training routine for almost three years of running.
Last May 2015, he enrolled at Primal Ape and tried doing CrossFit. “I got bored to my usual gym work outs, I wanted to try something new, to do more and be better”, Syril said. Since then, the box has been his second home. He works out twice a day, 6 days a week and rests on Sundays. “I enjoy every bit of it specially doing team WODs and attending the CrossFit Endurance classes of Coach Anton”, he said.
CrossFit Endurance is Primal Ape’s sports training program dedicated to improving performance, fitness and endurance sports potential. This specialty course inspires, coaches, and provides elite athletes with the most aggressive and proven fundamentals of sports science, exercise physiology, nutrition, and athletic training protocols.
Asked how CrossFit affected his performance in ultramarathons, “I increased my endurance even more and my recovery time is faster than before”, he answered. Syril also said that the best thing he learned in CrossFit is valuing “Quality over Quantity”. “It is not the weight of the load or the number of reps, the focus should always be the proper form and execution of the workout”, he added.
2016 will be a big year for Syril as he is planning to join the two editions of Bataan Death March Ultramarathons: 102 kilometers on January and 160 kilometers on March. His CF Endurance training will ultimately come into play on battle day. Certainly, all the pain and hardwork will all be worth it after crossing the finish line.
